The word, Byzantium, invokes images of聽oriental splendor and palace intrigue, ornate silks and mass聽bindings, processions, walls, horse races, the mystique of聽Hagia Sophia, the imperial throne or Greek Fire. Shrouded in聽mystery as if in wafts of incense, Byzantium has been both聽admired and reviled… often at the same time. In their day,聽simply calling themselves 鈥淩omans鈥� and poised between聽Europe and Asia, the Byzantines of Constantinople were聽divided from within by heresies or competing philosophies聽and besieged from without by barbarians, Latins, or Turks,聽sometimes on two fronts at once. This course will examine聽the history of Byzantium from the perspective of Church聽History relying on both primary and secondary sources to聽explore this rich and important world.
