Seminar Series

Wednesday, September 27, 2017, 7:00-8:30 PM

Presenters: Fr. Jason and Presbytera Halyna Charron

Topic: Insights on Married Priesthood

Synopsis: Balancing their domestic vocation as a married couple raising a houseful of daughters with their vocation as workers in Christ’s vineyard has produced many experiences over the past decade.  During this talk those gathered will hear practical and theoretical insights that will help them prepare for an abundant life as priest/presbytera in their given parishes.  What to do if your three-year old daughter walks through the Holy Doors during Liturgy to be with daddy? How to respond when your 18-month old pulls the fire alarm in a packed church?  Should the priest’s kids be given different treatment? Does marital love detract from priestly service? When two duties conflict, is there a roadmap to follow in making good choices? This talk aims to address these questions and more.

Question and Answer session included.
Program concludes by 8:30 PM.

Location:    Byzantine Catholic Seminary, 3605 Perrysville Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15214

Faculty Seminar Series

Wednesday, September 28, 2016, 7:00-8:30 PM

Presenters: Dr. Stephen Hildebrand and Dr. Michael Sirilla of Franciscan University, Steubenville, Ohio

Topic: Spiritual Perfection in Dionysius and Basil

Synopsis: Dr. Hildebrand will begin the seminar with a discussion of St. Basil’s view of the spiritual life.  We will see that Basil’s spirituality is rooted in his theological anthropology, and how God, having made man, leads him through the economy of salvation toward spiritual perfection.  The place of the Lord, the sacraments, and the ascetic life are central.  Dr. Sirilla will continue with a discussion of Dionysius’ theology of the hierarchy as found in his two principal works on the subject: The Celestial Hierarchy and The Ecclesial Hierarchy.  Dionysius teaches that God seeks to bring about “theosis” (deification) in us by means of a hierarchical order in which the lower members are assimilated to the Most High God by way of intermediaries with authority (the choirs of angels and then bishops, priests, and deacons).  We are led through the threefold path to spiritual perfection – the purgative, illuminative, and unitive stages – by means of divinely-established angelic and ecclesiastical hierarchs.

Question and Answer session included.
Program concludes by 8:30 PM.

°Õ´Ç±è¾±³¦:ÌýThe Pleasure of Sarah: Recovering Eden Again

Synopsis: In Genesis 18, we have Sarah’s laughter regarding the promise of a child despite her advanced age. Rabbinic as well as patristic commentary has much to say about this event. We too will look closely at this short but important exchange, where we will find clues to the anxieties of the later interpreters as well as a poignant moment where Sarah encourages us to consider Eden again.

Presenter: Mr. Geoffrey Mackey, Adjunct Associate Professor

Topic: Liturgical Composition in an Ecumenical Age: Byzantine Influences in 20th Century Protestant Liturgies

Synopsis: The 20th century liturgical movement affected every major Christian tradition in various ways. Methodist liturgiologist Geoffrey Wainwright has rightly indicated that one of the fruits of the liturgical movement was a convergence of practice through a return to common sources shared by all Christians, regardless of confessional differences. Three mainline Protestant groups in America – Episcopalians, Lutherans, and Presbyterians – produced revised liturgical books in the latter 20th century. This lecture will examine their texts to identify the influences of the Byzantine Tradition in their official liturgies.

Question and Answer session included.
Program concludes by 8:15 PM.
